Kinds of Volunteering Gigs

Overview of volunteering gigs

Groups generally need some kinds of help now, and different kinds nearer to November

Early in 2024 a lot of volunteering gigs will involve fundraising, getting (or giving) training, and doing other preparation for the election.

Then in October and November, the push will really be on to do get-out-the-vote efforts: contacting likely voters, encouraging people to vote etc.

Work with the public, or not– it’s all good

If you want to work directly with the public, especially in swing states, that can be especially valuable.

If you don’t live in a swing state, you can still work with the public if you like, for example doing telephone fundraising or closer to the election, telephone get out the vote efforts.

There are also non-public-facing roles people anywhere can do, for example writing letters or postcards to likely voters, doing web research, doing social media related tasks.

Specific volunteering roles

Roles that are especially important right now

  • Registering people to vote
  • Fundraising by phone, where you call prospective donors from a list the group gives you
  • Fundraising in person, for example staffing a table at a public event
  • Getting training in how to register people to vote, do fundraising, etc. This will often be remote via zoom etc.
  • Handing out flyers or delivering flyers door-to-door
  • Organizing in-person events, or helping during events

Roles that are especially important at election time

Volunteering Tips

It matters what state you live in – folks in swing states have lots of options, but folks in other states can help too.

It matters when you volunteer – groups need some kinds of help now, and different kinds nearer to November.

Choose volunteer gigs carefully – Even though we recommend a group here, not all of the group’s projects/campaigns will necessarily help stop Trump in 2024.
